I don’t watch much television outside of shows created by Jerry Seinfeld, animated by Matt Groening, or voiced by Trey Parker–so I’m not exactly the world’s foremost expert on television. There are many shows I’ve never seen. I don’t know what Colbert is reporting, who O’Reilly is factoring, or why stars are dancing. I can’t tell the difference between Larry King and Lou Dobbs. I thought Wolf Blitzer was a cook.
Even with all I don’t know, I can’t imagine there’s a bigger blowhard of hot air than the obnoxious Nancy Grace. I’ve never sat down to watch her program because I prefer my news from a more reliable source (like theonion.com); however, The Wife is a big fan of her show and since it’s on 48 times a day, I’ve managed to pick up tidbits here and there.
Nancy Grace is exactly what’s wrong with television news personalities. Hell, her show is the ultimate example of the sensationalistic nature of the media. Every episode of her show acts like it’s uncovering the greatest mystery the universe has ever seen. On screen, there’s a rolling ticker that updates whatever story she’s discussing (from her own slanted view) with the label BREAKING NEWS. The show’s logo (which happens to be her name) blinks and rotates in an attention-grabbing manner that’s generally reserved for Las Vegas billboards. She uses a multiple split-screens so the audience can see her, her interviewee, her second interviewee, and whatever “controversial footage” she deems relevant all at the same time. Even without hearing a sound, the whole show looks ‘loud.’
…and that’s before she speaks.
I’m fairly certain Nancy Grace isn’t familiar with the concept of microphones, amplifiers, and speakers. That’s the only explanation I can give for her propensity to scream at the camera so her words carry from her studio to the rest of the country. There are few audio combinations more annoying than a thick southern accent and loud, booming, nasally voice. It doesn’t matter if the volume is low or even on mute–her voice always seem to rattle my brain. On top of that, she seems to think the louder she becomes, the more right she is. And given that her ego is bigger than the state of Texas, she’s pretty much always screaming at the screen. All. The. Time.
On top of her sensationalistic manner and obnoxious righteous attitude, I think she might also be a massive hypocrite. Recently John Travolta’s son died: Nancy Grace dissected the story with the compassion of a stormtrooper…complete with BREAKING NEWS (this just in: he’s still dead). With the utmost authority, she asked “Why did Travolta`s teen son in the prime of his life die, and why is the public clamoring for the boy`s autopsy report? Shouldn`t anything remain private?”
How is that for a contradictory statement? In two sentences, she managed to ask a question and berate those who ask…the very same question! Nancy Grace proclaimed Jett’s death is “nobody’s business” on the very same show where she teased the story multiple times. She actually had the nerve to suggest the media was blowing it out of proportion (which might’ve been the ultimate kettle/pot scenario). She did this while looping footage of the Travolta family being chased by the paparazzi.
She’s judgmental, obnoxious, righteous, and hypercritical–and yet many turn to her for updates on the “news.” Nancy Grace has to be one of the worst things to happen to television since…since…since–I can’t think of anything. Can she truly be the worst thing to happen to television in its history? Gimmie a minute–I’ll think of something.
But my point is it’s people like Nancy Grace and shows like hers why I don’t trust the media. Everything you see and hear is bogus, manipulated, and told from a certain point of view. There’s absolutely nothing of merit in her program and it’s tabloid journalism at the most extreme level. I wish someone would muzzle her.
Oh man, I just Wikied Nancy Grace and she’s a bigger blowhard than I thought (either that or the person who created her Wikipedia page hates her more than I do). According to what I read, she repeatedly has a history of lying, misleading the public, and not telling the whole truth. As an attorney, she was repeatedly cited for prosecutorial misconduct. She’s mistakenly has accused people of being guilty on her show and although she’s quick to accuse, she appears to be slow to apologize. She once drove an interviewee to suicide (not surprising consider how much she berates those she looks down on). She even embellished the story of her own fiancé’s murder to sell a book–a book subtitled how the “media have hijacked our criminal justice system.” This woman is a really piece of work–how does anyone believe a word she says?
