Fun with Jim Carrey (and Dick and Jane)
Wednesday, January 04, 2006

I know what I can talk about. I went to the movies last night and saw “Fun with Dick and Jane.” I don’t know about the rest of the cats here, but I’ve never had much fun with dick. HAR-HAR-HAR! What? Too obvious? Anywhos, it was an okay movie but coulda been better. I think the most significant thing to come out of it is that Jim Carrey is now dead to me. He’s a decent actor and a fun guy, but he hasn’t made a “Jim Carrey movie” since “Me, Myself, & Irene.” That’s not to say he hasn’t made a good movie in five years; it’s just that I should change my expectations of what a “Jim Carrey movie” is. Jim Carrey has changed, my friends. He’s not the same goofy-looking guy who talks out of his butt. The days of silliness like “Ace Ventura” and “Dumb & Dumber” are in the past. Sure, he’s still a comedian, but he’s just not as funny anymore. I don’t think Carrey’s lost his edge nor have I gotten tired of his routine. That same goofy person appears when he’s doing an interview or on Letterman. I think he’s changed as an actor. I guess he’s still hell-bent on winning an academy award and being taken seriously, because even when he does comedies now, he’s not the same zany bozo he was in his earlier work. A lot of those earlier films were based on physical comedy including Carrey’s facial expressions or simply his demeanor. Those elements are almost completely missing from his modern work. “Bruce Almighty” used mainly special effects to get laughs (his parting of the red soup and being able to walk on water). In “Dick,” well…I’m not sure what was funny about “Dick.” But it wasn’t Carrey falling over or acting wacky. No spoilers here, but I only can recall two (maybe three) scenes where he acts a little silly. The improvision is gone. The silliness is gone. No longer can I see a comedy just because Jim Carrey was in it. I’m not saying that I’ll never see one of his movies again—I will if it looks good. But you can’t just put Jim Carrey in a movie and count on my money to contribute to his $20 millon paycheck—he’s gonna hafta earn it.
