Why my local library hasn't seen me in a while & my contribution to stopping literacy
Saturday, January 28, 2006

I claim I like to read--I always have.  Yet I don’t read as much as I used to.  At least it feels that way.  It’s been at least nine months since the last time I read a book (although I tried to read “The Shinning” last month--I just haven’t had the time).  But the ironic thing is that I haven’t been reading less--at least it doesn’t feel like I’m reading less.  I’m still spending my nights reading.  I still kick back in my spare time and read.  I guess the change is really in the medium.  Nowadays, almost all my recreational reading is done digitally.  I’m reading countless emails and newsletters that I get sent to my cell phone (it’s a great convenience--I can read it anytime I want).  I spend many hours a day reading stuff on various websites, ranging from blogs, message boards, and information sites (i.e., SI.com or Yahoo! news).

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I shouldn’t feel guilty for not reading any books lately.  I haven’t gotten dumber and I’m not sacrificing reading for other activities (like sex and video games): I’ve just altered my reading habits.  And as far as I can tell, there’s really nothing wrong with that.
