Stop! Or my cop will shoot!
You have the right to remain dead Thr, 08/31/06

A local 18-year old girl was killed recently by police officers after she charged the officers wielding a knife. The local community is outraged, wondering why this happened.

Uh, maybe because she charged a couple cops with a knife?

I am so sick of this crap. It happens a couple times a year. Law enforcement officials encounter a suspect with a weapon. The suspect gets out of control; the cops use lethal force--and people start screaming police brutality.

The past few days have been filled with press conferences, protest rallies, and pissed-off local citizens--all questioning the officers' actions. They are quick to blame the cops because an 18-year old girl is dead; a young life cut tragically short.

And it really irks me. I know I'm not the first person to make this argument or back the cops. But it just seems so obvious that the naysayers are either idiots or completely blind. I just wanna shake those fools until they think straight: it's not the cops' fault.

Yet everyone wants to blame the police--why? She was charging them with a knife. If anything, this whole thing is poor Knife-Wielding 18-Year Old Girl's fault. If she didn't wanna get shot, she shouldn'tve attacked the cops. She isn't the victim. Everything that happened to her is the product of her doing. The true victims are the cops involved.

Many are calling for their jobs. The bad press alone is enough to ruin your sense of self-worth. And I'm sure taking a life isn't easy. Those two guys probably feel an enormous amount of grief--even if the shooting was justified.

No, no--it's always the cops' fault, never mind the fact that a witness described Knife-Wielding 18-Year Old Girl as "crazy." Never mind that she slashed her mother with that knife before encountering the police. Never mind that she was told repeatedly to "drop the knife." She was just an innocent, 18- year old girl whose life was ended too short by the hands of 'overzealous' cops.

I can't believe how many people rally in support of the dead girl--like somehow her rights were violated (the 89th Amendment: the right to not be shot when attacking cops with knives). I saw a woman on the news wondering why the cops didn't use a taser, beanbag shotgun, or rubber bullets. She said the cops showed no humanity.

Now I'm not an expert on police officer equipment or accessories, but I'm pretty sure tasers, beanbag shotguns, and rubber bullets are not part of the everyday patrolman's arsenal. Sure, SWAT teams have that stuff but everyday cops? They might have a lot of stuff on their belts but they're cops--not Batman. When a deranged chik is charging you with a knife, you make do with what you got. It's not like the cops coulda asked the crazy chik for a timeout so they could get tasers from the police station.

I ask you--anyone--what would you have done in that same situation? You got no idea what that girl is capable of. Sure, she might be like only 130 pounds but she's holding a lethal weapon. People have killed for far less.

To me, the details are inconsequential. A law enforcement official asked her to do something and she didn't do it so they shot her. Everything else doesn't make a bit of difference. If she didn't wanna get shot, she should have listened.

I hate the way our society despises cops. Sure, there are some bad apples--just like there are bad teachers and doctors. But for the most part, cops are just hardworking people trying to do their jobs. It's not an easy job and we owe them a lot for it. Sometimes things get ugly. But it's not like the officer went into her bedroom and shot her while she was sleeping. All she had to do was put the knife down.

But no, the public doesn't see it that way. I love how the media rarely tells the part where she already attacked someone with that knife--her own mother for cripes' sake. No one has a perfect mom but when was the last time you took a knife to your mother? The girl clearly wasn't stable and everyone is willing to look past that because she's dead.

I recall a story from a few years ago where police officers shot a 14-year old boy who tried to run them over with a car. The usual public faces called for the officers' arrests. Thanks to talking heads and screaming civil right's leaders, the public ignored that fact a 14-year old boy tried to run over cops with a car. No one wondered why was a 14-year old doing driving a car. No one asked why was he trying to flatten cops. Of course not--he's the victim.

What bunch of crap. Fourteen-year old boys are not allowed to drive cars let alone use them to kill people: if he followed the rules, he would have never been shot. It's simple: live within the rules of our society and you'll be fine. Cops don't go around shooting people for no reason. Every officer involved shooting could be avoid is the suspect just adheres to the officer's command.

But no one ever sees it that way.
