Guns, porn, and other post-Christmas fallout
Monday, December 31, 2007

Rambo visited the television station last week. The NRA was hosting Toys for Tots event and this gun-loving psychopath demanded that we air promotions for it during our Arts Calendar (only the NRA could consider skeet shooting an art). It's funny, just when you think the NRA is solely about shooting stuff, they go and do something charitable like this. According to the flyer handed me, the event is called a Family Fun Shoot (because apparently nothing breeds family bonding like learning how to shoot for kill). Admission is $5 and a new unwrapped toy. You can bring your own firearms and ammo ("all caliber, no magnums or hollow points"). Children and families are welcomed.

I wasn't sure what to do with this information. Although it's for a "good cause," I'm not sure if we really wanna be promoting NRA events. However, if I don't put this on the air he might get angry and come back to the station. And if there's one thing I learn in high school, it's that you never piss off the guy with the gun.

Some dude bought an iPod as a Christmas present for his daughter and discovered the machine was preloaded with porn. Apparently someone else bought the item, put content on it, and then returned it (Wal-Mart put the iPod back on the shelf instead of returning it to Apple). Wal-Mart realized the error and offered to replace the iPod for him, but the guy wanted none of it. He bought another iPod for his daughter at a different store and is seeking out lawyers for the inevitable million-dollar lawsuit that's sure to follow.

Talk about a guy who's looking to get something for nothing. Does this really warrant a lawsuit? Where's the damages? The guy looks at Wal-Mart and sees deep pockets--it's the American way. Everyone is looking to get rich quick. It disgusts me. I'm sure deep down, that guy is thrilled to get an iPod and porn. If anything, it's the perfect Christmas present.

Speaking of Christmas presents, I've noticed this year that less and less people opt for wrapping Christmas presents. It seems like a growing number of people choose to put presents in decorative bags. I have a couple problems with that--and not just 'cause I'm a constant complainer. Sticking a present in a bag is the easy way out. Sure, it might take my 20 minutes to wrap a simple pair of socks, but golly gosh darn it, at least I did it myself. Plus, it's far more fun unwrapping a present than taking it out of a bag. The anticipation. The intrigue. The giant mess it leaves behind. When I think of Christmas, it's about unwrapping presents under a tree--not pulling them out of a bag.

Happy New Year.
