    Superman--a quick, early morning review.
it's like finally getting that dream date... Wed, 06/28/06

I cannot recall the last time I was that disappointed with a movie. Sure, "Dukes of Hazzard" blew--but I expected it to suck. And as bad as "Pearl Harbor" was, it did have its moments. I'll have my formal review later, but "Superman Returns" was a super disappointment.

Usually when a movie fails to meet expectations it's because the movie was place so high up on a pedestal, the anticipation level is completely unobtainable (kinda like the eagerness of having sex with a hot chik only to discover being hot doesn't make you good in bed). I know I've been seriously looking forward to this movie since the dawn of time. I know that sorta hype usually leaves one disappointed. But I don't think that's the case here. I think the reason I was left feeling unfulfilled is because Director Bryan Singer failed to capture one key element to the Superman mythology: Superman is exciting. Plot, acting, effects, and cinematography I approve of; the pacing was awful. The movie about 40 minutes too long. The climax happens with 20 minutes remaining in the movie. And simple, comedic elements were sorely missing.

I could be wrong. It could be because I caught a midnight showing and hella tired. I could have missed what Singer was shooting for. But my initial, gut reaction is that "Superman Returns" sorely lacks the pacing, action, and feel-good that one thinks of regarding the Superman icon. See you in the morning.
