Crimes, Chores, and the iPod craze
    Sunday, August 13, 2006

Man I had a boring weekend--unless you can count cleaning toilets and pulling weeds exciting. It's funny 'cause when I was a kid I used to perform such tasks because I usually screwed up and deserved some punishment. Now here I am, as an adult, still performing those duties. Not because I'm being punished and certainly not because I like it--it's because I have to. Chores don't get themselves done. I need to either hire a housekeeper on find someone else to do them for me. No wonder people have kids--so they can get out of doing the chores they hate. Come to think of it, I never really screwed up that bad as a kid--my mom probably just didn't wanna clean the toilet herself.

Wanna hear something really nuts: I don't own an iPod. That's right--I feel like I'm freaking Amish.

Actually, I have no need for an iPod. I feel like we as a society have become iPod obsessed. I see people freaking every where with mp3 players--and the iPod is the top seller. The irony is that there are other, cheaper, better, portable music player options than the iPod. But that's never stopped the American consumer and iPods are everywhere. I swear I've seen old ladies walking around wearing those white ear buds. And people will put 'em on for the most frivolous reasons. I've seen people wearing 'em while taking a five minute stroll out to the ruddy parking lot (whaddya get; one song outta that?). I play rec league softball and I've seen more than a handful of players wearing their iPods when they gotta go play outfield (if it's that boring you need a new hobby).

I have an mp3 player but I hardly used it. Sure, I have "moments" of down time when music would be great, but for the most part they're short, five minute intervals and hardly worth the time it takes to put on and boot the thing up. A few months ago I had to go to Vegas on a business trip. I was there alone and it got rather boring (yeah, I know--I can't believe I said Vegas was "boring") so I tried walking around with the ear buds listening to music all the time. I found it to be a distraction--and I just started getting tired of music. It seems odd--who gets tired of music? I reached a point where I was craving a commercial just to break up all the music: I wonder if I can download them off iTunes...
