Because complaining about stuff shouldn't be limited to the elderly
The political zoo (monkeys, women, and other minorities)
    Saturday, December 30, 2006

When I was about six years old, I went to the zoo and saw a bunch of gorillas. My pops told me that they were related to humans on some sorta biological level. After sitting around doing nothing for a while, one of the gorillas proceeded to hurl. When he was finished, he dipped his finger in the discharge and tasted it--kinda like you and I would taste uncooked cake mix. That's when I knew my dad was right: any creature willing to eat his own vomit clearly is related to his side of the family.

The world is changing in front of our very eyes and I'm not sure we realize it. Or maybe it's a good thing that people don't realize it. The 2008 presidential election is less than two years away. A lot can happen between now and then, but as far as I can tell the top two democratic candidates are Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton--a black man and a woman.

I'm not complaining--not the slightest bit. I just find it interesting that the media hasn't taken jumped all over this and blown it out of proportion. Maybe it's because the primaries are a year away. But the way the press likes to make stories out of nothing--the way the media overdoes a story--I thought we'd hear more about the Democrats pushing a minority for our nation's highest office.

Conversely, it's a tremendous risk for the Democrats to choose a minority to represent their party. The White House is theirs for the taking--given the hatred toward President Bush, a 2008 victory for the Democrats seems like a lock. However, there are a lot of bigoted people out there who would never vote for a woman or a brother.

Maybe that's the plan. Because Bush is so detested, a roller skating chimpanzee will probably beat whomever the Republicans put on the ballot. Maybe The Powers That Be have decided it's time this country elects someone other than a white male as its president. If you're gonna roll the dice, this is the election to do it.

Whatever the case, I hope Obama's skin color or Hillary's genitals don't become a story. It seems foolish to make an issue out of things that aren't the slightest bit relevant to whether or not someone can do the job. Let's face it: Barack is pretty white for a black man and Hillary cuts her hair like a dude.
