Not everyone needs drugs (except Tommy Chong--without pot, I'm pretty sure he'll die)

I'm not the kinda guy who believes much in modern medicine. My detest for doctors is well-documented, but it's more than that. It's not that I'm stubborn or think I'm macho--I think it just has a lot to do with how I was raised. I don't know why, but for some reason I don't buy over the counter medicines.

If I got a back ache, it never crosses my mind to take a Tylenol. Stuffy noses rarely are treated with...with...with...whatever the hell you're supposed to buy when you have a stuffy nose. I don't use cough syrup, Nyquil, cold remedy or Sudafed. Maybe I'm just an idiot: but I never consider using any of these products--probably because at times of illness, I forget they exist.

It could be because quite often when I'm sick, I fail to realize that I'm sick. I'll walk around sluggishly and with a headache--but I don't let anything as trivial as that keep me from my normal routine. I'll usually push it to the point where I don't wanna get out of bed--that's when I'll finally realize I'm sick. And by that point it's usually too late to do anything but see a doctor.

I think another reason why I don't invest in such items is because I doubt their effectiveness anyway. They're kinda like those chemicals you can buy for your car that are guaranteed to boast engine performance while cleaning and adding life to you car. Those things are total crap. Sure, they contain some chemicals that in theory could help your car--but they don't really do anything.

That's kinda how I see all those over the counter illness and prevention remedies: useless products that don't really help. Really, how much credit should they get in any recovery--you were due to get better eventually anyway. Let's face it--if they were really potent, I'd need a prescription to buy them. Besides, there's so many different products all claiming to do something different. If I actually did take something for everything that ails me, I'd be on a cocktail so strong it'd make Courtney Love pass out.

One-a-day vitamins, aspirin, Metamucil--it doesn't matter. Even if I'm healthy and got an ache, I won't touch it. Hell, I use to use Icy Hot on my shoulder, but I've built up an immunity to it and now I can't even feel it anymore.

I'd like to say my independence from drugs makes me a tougher person, but we all know that ain't true--I'm a total pansy (you shoulda seen how I freaked out when I got something in my eye yesterday). Maybe because I don't use any vitamins or illness aids, somehow I've built up a tougher immune system. Let's face it--I rarely get sick (at most twice a year). When I do get sick, whatever I catch is brutal. It usually beats the hell outta me for about a week and requires some sorta prescription medicine to get rid of it. But what do I know? My medical knowledge is limited to what they discuss on "Scrubs" and games of Operation as a kid (I could never get that damn funny bone).
